Rolex Sea-Dweller Value: References, Resale and How It Differs From the Submariner

The Sea-Dweller was built for professional saturation divers, and that purpose shows in its details: a helium escape valve, a thicker case and a depth rating well beyond the Submariner’s. For owners, it is a watch with a devoted collector base and a surprisingly wide spread of values, from modern steel references to vintage pieces that trade as serious collectibles. Our history of the Sea-Dweller covers how it came to be. This guide focuses on what it is worth.

Rolex Sea-Dweller

Sea-Dweller vs. Submariner

The two look alike at a glance, but the Sea-Dweller differs in ways that matter to buyers:

  • Helium escape valve: a one-way valve that lets helium escape during decompression after saturation dives. Rolex developed it with the French diving company COMEX, as Monochrome Watches’ Sea-Dweller history recounts.
  • Depth rating: 1,220 meters on references from the 16660 onward, compared with 300 meters for the Submariner.
  • Case: thicker, and on the current 126600, 43mm in diameter.
  • Cyclops: Sea-Dwellers had no date magnifier until the 126600 introduced one in 2017.

Sea-Dweller References

16651967–1983The original. “Double Red” dials (two lines of red text, to 1977) and later all-white “Great White” dials are both highly collected

166001989–2009Twenty-year production run; aluminum bezel insert
116600 “SD4K”2014–2017Ceramic bezel, 40mm, no cyclops; the shortest-lived Sea-Dweller

Production dates follow Monochrome Watches. The Deepsea, a related model rated far deeper, is covered in our article on the Rolex Deepsea D-Blue.

What Collectors Pay Extra For

  • Red text: the vintage 1665 “Double Red” is one of the most sought-after Rolex dive watches. The red line on the modern 126600 is a nod to it.
  • Original dials and bezels: on vintage references, a replaced service dial or bezel insert lowers collector value significantly.
  • Short production runs: the 116600 was made for about three years, which supports interest now that it is discontinued.
  • Documented provenance: original papers, service history and, for vintage pieces, a clear ownership history.

Condition and Originality

Sea-Dwellers were built to be used, and many were. Buyers look closely at bezel insert condition, case polishing, bracelet stretch, the helium valve and signs of water intrusion. On a vintage watch, the question is not only whether it works but whether its dial, hands and bezel are original to the reference.

Current Value Ranges

ReferenceWhere most sales landed
126600 (steel, 43mm)About $12,200–$14,600, against a 2026 retail price of about $14,100
126603 (yellow Rolesor)About $16,000–$20,000
116600 “SD4K”About $13,500–$16,500
16600About $10,500–$12,100
16660 / 1665 (vintage)Evaluated individually; originality drives value

Figures are the range where most recorded sales landed in EveryWatch’s sold-listing data for August and September 2026, mostly dealer sales, with outliers excluded. They are retail-side market prices, not purchase offers: a buyer’s offer is lower because it accounts for authentication, reconditioning and resale time. Note that the discontinued 116600 currently sells above the newer 126600.

Sea-Dweller vs. Submariner Resale

The Submariner has a larger buyer pool, which usually makes it easier to sell quickly. The Sea-Dweller appeals to a more specific buyer, often one who wants the tool-watch specification or a particular reference. Neither is automatically worth more. The reference, metal and condition decide. For the Submariner side, see what your Submariner is worth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Rolex Sea-Dweller hold its value?

Modern steel Sea-Dwellers in good condition generally hold value well, and discontinued and vintage references can attract strong collector interest. Individual value depends on condition and completeness.

What is a “Double Red” Sea-Dweller?

An early reference 1665 with two lines of red text on the dial. These were produced until about 1977 and are among the most collectible Sea-Dwellers.

Is the 116600 worth more than the 126600?

It depends on condition and demand at the time of sale. The 116600 was produced for only about three years, which gives it a collector following, while the 126600 is the current model.

Why does my Sea-Dweller have a valve on the side?

That is the helium escape valve, which releases helium that can enter the case during saturation diving. It is standard on the Sea-Dweller.
